TRAINING COURSES FOR YOU AND YOUR DOG

PUPPY/BEGINNERS CLASS

This class is for new starters to the world of Dog training. Puppies and older dogs that have not had any basic training start in this class.

The course fees are for 8 weeks, plus the preliminary evening. If you wish to continue in this class then it is £4 per week. The start time for this class is 7-00 pm until 7-45 pm

The first week is a one to one session where the aims of the training and the various methods used is explained. It also helps you to fit into the class situation without feeling lost or embarrassed ( we have all been there)

We teach you to teach your dog to:-

To be at ease around other dogs and people, this is achieved by socialisation exercises conduced during the class session.

Walk at heel with a loose lead. We also teach your dog to undertake an about turn whilst retaining a loose lead.

To Sit, Down and Stand. We also teach you how to train your dog to stay in these positions. As the training continues, the time that your dog is left in these positions will increase.

The most important exercise, namely the Recall. This exercise ensures that your dog will return to you when called.

We also teach other commands that could be useful for example, The Leave command, with this command you can prevent your dog from picking up something that could be harmful to it.

We also give you helpful hints to improve Vet visits. (this is where the Stand comes in)

Extra training at home means faster improvement, this is essential.

All training is carried out using motivational and kind methods. The use of praise and treats is encouraged to motivate the dogs in training.

There is always more than one way to train your dog, so if you have a problem please ask for advice. There is a wealth of experience in the club so your “MAJOR” problem can be solved just by asking.

We do welcome questions during or after the lessons. We do want to help you, just ask.

INTERMEDIATE CLASS

You will move to this class once you and your dog have mastered the basic training. You and your dog have come a long way from the first week.

There is no limit on how long you remain in this class. Some handlers find this class standard is as far as they wish to go. The start time for this class is 7-45 pm until 8-30 pm

In this class you will build on what you and your dog have learnt in the Beginners class.

You will continue to improve the walking to heel with a loose lead and start walking off lead in a controlled manner. Socialisation exercises are continued during the class session.

You start the left about turn. This exercise teaches the dog to be aware of the handlers movement and not the predicable moves as before.

The times that the dog is left in the Sit, Down and Stand position will be increased leading towards being able to leave the dog while the handler goes out of sight but in the same room.

The Recall is progressed towards doing this exercise off lead.

You start the Retrieve, in this exercise the dog will retrieve an article and return it to its handler. This is an exercise most dogs enjoy.

We also make a start on some new skills that you will hopefully perfect in the Advanced class.

Again all training is carried out using motivational and kind methods. The use of praise and treats is encouraged to motivate the dogs in training.

We do welcome questions during or after the lessons. We do want to help you, just ask.

ADVANCED CLASS

You will move to this class once you and your dog have mastered the Intermediate class training.

There is no limit to the course duration in this class. The start time for this class is 8-30 pm until 9-15 pm

In this class we will build on what you and your dog have learnt in the second class.

During this class we expect dogs to start to work off lead. Socialisation exercises continue during the class session.

Heel work is undertaken on/off lead carrying out both left and right about turns. The dog should remain close to the handler at all times.

The Recall is undertaken off lead, this includes the A Recall which is a Recall used in competitions.

We also teach the Emergency Stop, this teaches the dog to drop when instructed. This can be used should you wish to stop your dog in a emergency situation.

We continue the Retrieve using a wooden dumb-bell as the retrieve item.

We start to teach how to do a Send Away. In this exercise the dog is taught to go away from the handler and drop into a down when instructed. The dog will remain in the down until the handler releases it.

We start to teach how to do a “Scent Search”. This exercise teaches the dog to use it's most powerful asset (it's nose) to find a piece of cloth (handkerchief size) with the handler's scent on it amongst other cloths with no scent. Most dogs really like this exercise as it is very natural to them in every day life.

We progress the Sit, Down and Stand to a level that the handler can leave the dog in the position and leave the room for up to 1-2 minutes.

We do welcome questions during or after the lessons. We do want to help you, just ask.
